A few words about the choir from our director of music and organist, Natalie Box, Director of Music and organist.

Choral music, in the words of composer, John Rutter, isn’t one of life’s frills. It’s “something that goes to the very heart of our humanity, our sense of community and our souls”.

That’s something we certainly believe in as a choir here in Monkstown and it’s something we would very much like to share, not just with our congregation, but with anyone who would like to join us in what is a joyous and rewarding experience.

We normally have sixteen members when at full strength and we would love to increase that number. You don’t have to be able to read music to participate. Just bring your enthusiasm and we’ll provide all the support you might need !

We practise one evening a week, with a break for summer.

Last year we piloted a new programme for transition year students and plan to continue. It was a lot of fun for both students and choir and a valuable learning experience. I
am in contact with just one school at the moment but I would be very interested to hear from any young person who might like to give it a try.

Age is not a barrier, however, and we would love to hear from anyone who would like to share the joy and benefits of singing together, which are well proven for people of all ages.

As well as leading and encouraging the congregation in hymn singing, we sing anthems and accompany elements of the service.

A tradition of the church that we like to keep alive is the Anglican chant. This is done to sing the psalm and it
allows time to appreciate the beauty and meaning of the words.

We also have a wonderful repertoire of popular and meaningful hymns to choose from for our services.

As St Augustine may have said: “To sing is to pray twice”.

Singing together fosters a sense of community, brings joy and creates a powerful prayer experience. Do come and share that joy. You will be made feel very welcome.
